The 2023 MLB BAN against Stacking Defenses: Opens up space between defenders with offenses returning to previous levels.
MLB BAN & [DEFENSE: Slow footed fielders will look like amateurs watching the balls bounce by, ...defenders best restricted to DH duties. The BAN heavily favors defenders with quick first steps, reflexes, strong run & arm/throw skills in an effort to take away some of those "hits". Slow defenders/outfielders will be openly exposed, ...their playing time decreased. See Scouting Charts

MLB BAN & OFFENSE. The BAN encourages more high velocity line drives to drop in between defenders in a return to previous extra base hits/slugging percentages. Hitting averages are expected to jump along with higher On Base Percentages. Throw out the current lower % stats vs stacked offenses. Expect most player's stats to mimic those posted before the popular stacked defenses of today.

REVENUE SHARING: Another major difference for 2023 A's. Applying RS towards long term roster gains is expected. This means fielding a MLB team that allows rookies & prospects time to hone their skills. The RS is progressive and spread over 4 years which lends itself to a couple contract extensions. Guessing: First year @ $25 milllion?, 2nd @ $50mil?, 3rd @ $75 mil?, 4th @ $100 mil.?

2023 FREE AGENTS/EXTENSIONS/TRADES
  • Free Agent Vogt: Next step a minor league coaching assignment as he targets a MLB coaching career?
  • Free Agent Pinder: A long-shot argument to Re-sign Chad: The 2022 A's with few other bat options sent Pinder to the plate vs RHP too often. But vs LHP as a #2 top of the lineup hitter or off the bench, Pinder's power can win the game with one swing. He can also remain in games as a defender, almost anywhere.
Pinder's high ball off the bat velocities project very with the MLB BAN against Stacking Defenses. The faster a hit arrives between defenders the harder it will be to record that out. Pinder's market may be affected after his poor 2022. If so, I'm hoping he might re-sign a "Prove It" type contract close to his current $2.75 mil with the A's.
  • 2023 SHORT TERM EXTENSIONS / MLB Revenue Sharing? Kemp 30, 3-4 years? Pinder 30, 2-3 years? (See paragraph above). Long Shots but short deals for A's Top of the Line Up Hitters makes sense with so many rookies & prospects. ...before his hip operation Chapman turned down the A's 10 year/$150 mil. offer. Long term contracts and injuries are killers for small market teams like the A's so long term probably doesn't happen for the A's any time soon, even with this Revenue Sharing.
  • 2024 SHORT TERM EXTENSION / MLB Revenue Sharing? Murphy 28, for 5 more years? AN wants to trade Murphy but there really is no good reason to trade an all-star player that hits #3 and hasn't peaked yet. There is every reason to offer a contract extension, by mid-season 2024 & push his free agency to 2029? IF Murphy says "No" then the A's should take calls and consider best deals. A top of rotation SP would be my target.
  • MLB FREE AGENTS: A's prospects need to be given MLB playing time. Most FAs are costly 30+ year old temps past their peaks and more prone to missing games with injuries. Free agent pitchers on "prove-it" or bounce-back contracts make more sense than adding free agent positional defenders to the current inventory of prospects.
  • EARLY A's TRADE? CF/RF Ramon Laureano 28, by Trade Deadline? ...or not? ...the MLB BAN is also great for Ramon's offense & defense His value to the A's & other teams will only rise. Avoiding early season trades of players like CF/RF Ramon with 4 years is wise unless an offer is just too good to say "No". It is good for A's to re-build his value at this point in time.
  • DFA/RULE 5 CLAIMS: A's sifting for talent is eternal & continuous. Day by day, minute by minute, ...as always & forever.
  • DRAFT: Important but not a factor for the 2023 MLB Roster.
  • OPTIONS: See Rosterresource.com for updates.
