Game Thread #114: A’s at Indians

Play ball, after a brief rain delay

The Oakland A’s and Cleveland Indians had to wait an extra hour for their game Wednesday, due to rain at Progressive Field. In August. But the weather cleared up and now they’re going to play!

The A’s battled hard for a win in the series opener Tuesday night, thanks to historic work by their bullpen and another round of clutch hitting from Zombie Jed Lowrie. The victory was their fifth straight.

They’ll look to extend that win streak to six this evening, behind starter Frankie Montas. The right-hander has been quality in each of his past five outings, and the last time he got truly knocked around was all the way back in June (by the Rangers). One of those recent quality starts came against Cleveland in mid-July, when he worked six innings and allowed just two runs while recording seven strikeouts, albeit in a tough-luck loss.

The winning pitcher in that July game was Cal Quantrill, who opposes Montas again tonight. The righty only went five innings that day but kept the damage to just one run, on an RBI double by Mitch Moreland — who’s in the lineup tonight for just the second time this month.
