The 2021 Bay Bridge Series just got a bit less fun.
The Oakland A’s announced Friday that they’ve placed outfielder Mark Canha on the 10-day injured list, due to a left hip strain. Canha exited Thursday’s game due to soreness in the hip and later had an MRI.
This is quite a blow to Oakland’s lineup, as the 32-year-old has been one of their best players this season. He’s provided power and a high OBP from the leadoff spot, and on defense he’s moved around to cover all three outfield positions when needed. There is depth on the roster, but it’ll be tough to fully replace his star value.
In the short-term, this is also a bummer for this weekend’s series between the A’s and Giants. Canha is a Bay Area native from San Jose who stuck around for college at UC Berkeley, and any local players on the field further enhance the geographic rivalry between Oakland and San Francisco. Canha’s bat-flip homer in 2018 is a particularly memorable moment from recent editions of this matchup.
Oakland is also currently without Pleasanton product Stephen Piscotty, as the outfielder is on the IL with a sprained wrist. His 2020 highlights included a 9th-inning grand slam to tie the score against the Giants, in a game the A’s eventually won on a sac fly by Canha.
To replace Canha on the active roster, infielder Vimael Machin was called up from Triple-A Las Vegas. Machin played nine games for the A’s earlier this season, most recently on May 13, and since returning to the minors he’s batting .300 for Las Vegas in 31 games with his signature excellent plate discipline.
- Machin, AAA: .300/.391/.483, 113 wRC+, 3 HR, 12.3% BB, 14.5% Ks
- Machin, MLB: 1-for-20, 2 BB, 7 Ks
No details yet on the specifics or severity of Canha’s injury.
UPDATE, per Shayna Rubin of the Mercury News: “MRI revealed left hip tendinitis for Mark Canha. Nothing alarming on the surgically repaired part of his hip.”
