The Oakland A’s have gotten a few players back from injury lately, but now a new name is heading to the shelf.

The A’s placed right fielder Stephen Piscotty on the 10-day injured list Saturday morning, the team announced. The diagnosis is a sprained left wrist, retroactive to June 16.

To take his place on the active roster, fellow outfielder Skye Bolt was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Piscotty has been “battling [the wrist injury] off and on since spring training,” reports Matt Kawahara of the S.F. Chronicle. He is off to see a specialist for a closer look, and he’ll get an MRI on Monday, notes Kawahara in the full writeup.

The 30-year-old is having another tough season, for the third year in a row after a wonderful 2018. Accordingly he has lost playing time amid a hot A’s lineup, starting barely half of the team’s games so far, and just three out of 15 contests in June. As has often been the case the last few summers, we now find out there’s been an injury component contributing to his struggles.

  • Piscotty: .217/.284/.357, 83 wRC+, 4 HR, 7.8% BB, 23.4% Ks, .317 xwOBA

His spot on the bench will be filled by Bolt. It hasn’t been long since we saw the rookie switch-hitter, who spent most of June in the majors covering for Ramon Laureano but was sent back down on Wednesday when Laureano was activated. Normally a player must wait 10 days after being optioned to the minors before they may be recalled to MLB, but Bolt gets to bypass that rule because he’s coming up to replace someone who’s going on the IL.

In nine games for the A’s this month, Bolt only went 1-for-13 at the plate in sporadic duty, but he did blast his first career homer and also made a great diving catch in CF.

Here’s the updated roster and injury report.
