Game Thread #53: A’s vs. Angels

Can the A’s top last night’s shutout?

We’re on to the second game of the Oakland A’s series against the Los Angeles Angels, and the Halos are still searching for their first run after being shut out by Chris Bassitt in the opener on Thursday.

Friday brings Sean Manaea to the mound for the A’s. The lefty owns the team’s other official shutout this season, though Manaea’s only required seven innings in a shortened doubleheader game. He faced the Angels in his last start too and went five innings, allowing one run and striking out six batters.

Meanwhile, Oakland’s lineup will face superstar Shohei Ohtani. The right-hander is off to a phenomenal start on the mound, striking out 35% of his batters en route to a 2.37 ERA and a sparkling .291 xwOBA. He was supposed to pitch last night, but got stuck in traffic or something, so he’s going tonight instead. On the bright side, when he pitches he stays out of the batting lineup, which is convenient because he’s also one of the Angels best hitters.
