The Oakland A’s announced several pieces of injury news on Friday, with everything from a player going on the injured list, to another being day-to-day, to another being activated but not brought back to the majors.
First up, top pitching prospect A.J. Puk was reinstated from the 10-day IL, but then immediately optioned down to Triple-A. The southpaw went on the shelf in early April due to a strained left biceps, then began a rehab assignment in the minors on May 11 and pitched five times for the Las Vegas Aviators.
Looking forward, manager Bob Melvin said “it’s kind of up in the air at this point” whether Puk will work as a starter or reliever based on how each successive outing goes, per Rickey Blog.
Elsewhere on the pitching staff, reliever Reymin Guduan went on the 10-day IL due to a strained right groin. This is the lefty’s second trip to the IL this year, after suffering a sprained thumb in April while covering first base. In his most recent appearance on Tuesday he also had to cover first on a grounder.
To take Guduan’s spot in the bullpen, right-hander Jordan Weems was recalled from Triple-A. This is his third stint in Oakland this season, and he’s pitched in five games total.
- Weems: 4⅓ ip, 3 runs, 4 Ks, 3 BB, 1 HR, 2 hits, .443 xwOBA
However, Weems isn’t the only pitcher returning to Oakland today. Jesús Luzardo is also back with the team, after making a rehab appearance for Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday on the road against Sacramento. Melvin said the following, per Rickey Blog:
“He’s back here with us right now. We’ll probably have a plan for you tomorrow as far as what his next outing is, and where.”
In his rehab game, Luzardo faced five batters and retired four of them, including a strikeout of Chadwick Tromp. Earlier this week, Melvin mentioned that they might put Luzardo in the bullpen initially rather than waiting until he’s stretched back out for a starter’s workload, as a way to get him back in the majors sooner.
Laureano scratched
On the position player side, CF Ramon Laureano is out of the lineup Friday due to right groin tightness. He’s just day-to-day for now, but the club wants to be prudent and give him some rest anytime a little tweak pops up like this, says Melvin per Rickey Blog. He’ll be reevaluated on Saturday.
