Game Thread #50: A’s vs. Mariners

Bounce back from last night’s loss!

The Oakland A’s waited until late May to finally get their first look at the AL West division rival Seattle Mariners, and the series opener didn’t go well Monday night. The A’s lost 4-2 and finished the evening with five of their final six batters striking out.

Oakland will look to put that disappointing performance behind them on Tuesday, as the series continues at the Coliseum. The A’s send Cole Irvin to the mound, which has been a good thing against every opponent except the Houston Astros. In six non-Astros starts, Swirvin Irvin has a 1.89 ERA in 38 innings, with 34 strikeouts and only six walks.

Meanwhile, the green-and-gold get their first look at Mariners pitcher Logan Gilbert. The right-hander was a 1st-round draft pick (No. 14 overall) in 2018, and a consensus Top 40 national prospect entering the season. The 24-year-old made his MLB debut on May 13, and so far has been knocked around in both his appearances, against the Indians and Tigers.
