Another day, another injury for the Oakland A’s. Two this time.

The A’s placed relief pitchers Burch Smith and Reymin Guduan on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, the team announced. For Smith it’s a strained right groin, and for Guduan it’s sprained left thumb.

To take their spots, Oakland brought up reliever Jordan Weems and outfielder Seth Brown from their alternate site camp.

The Guduan news is expected, as the lefty exited the game Monday after falling awkwardly while covering first base on a grounder. Smith’s injury is a new development, meaning the A’s have now incurred five injuries since the first pitch of Opening Day, just five games into the season, though one of them already returned to the lineup.

The right-hander Smith pitched only a dozen innings for the A’s last year before landing on the IL due to his forearm, and this year he threw three innings. Guduan has pitched three times this season as a 9th-inning mopup man in blowout losses, and his record includes as many runs (8) as outs.

The bullpen now gets a fresh arm in the righty Weems, who had a promising rookie debut last summer in 14 innings.

Weems, 2020: 3.21 ERA, 14 ip, 18 Ks, 7 BB, 1 HR, 3.05 FIP, .303 xwOBA

As for Brown, he helps fill in a bench that has been thinned due to injuries. Super-sub Chad Pinder is on the 10-day IL, and CF Ramon Laureano has missed three games to a jammed left wrist. Brown offers a lefty bat with power, which showed well for 83 plate appearances in his brief 2019 debut in the majors, and he can play a few positions on defense between the outfield corners and first base. He’s No. 18 on our Community Prospect List.

Brown, 2019 MLB: .293/.361/.453/.121 wRC+, 0 HR, 8.4% BB, 27.7% Ks, .311 wxOBA
