The Oakland A’s wave is over at 13 games, after a loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. Now they’ll get the chance to start a new win streak on Monday, in the opener of a four-game road series against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The A’s send Sean Manaea to the mound. The lefty has tossed three straight quality starts totaling three runs in 19 innings, with 18 strikeouts and only two walks, and his last time out produced a seven-inning shutout in a short doubleheader game. He’ll look to continue that roll against a Rays team that he last saw in the 2019 Wild Card Game, which did not go well for Manaea. Good news, Yandy Diaz isn’t leading off this time. Bad news, he’s hitting second, behind 2020 postseason phenom Randy Arozarena.
Meanwhile, Oakland will see a familiar face on the mound for Tampa Bay, as 41-year-old Rich Hill draws the start. The lefty pitched for the green-and-gold in 2016, then spent time with the Dodgers and Twins before signing with the Rays last winter. Former A’s prospect Joey Wendle lines up for the opponent at the hot corner.
