The Oakland A’s called up pitcher James Kaprielian to serve as the 29th player on their roster for Tuesday’s doubleheader, the team announced.

Active rosters this season are normally 28 players, but on the day of a doubleheader each team is allowed to add a 29th man to help out. That player sticks around just for the day and then goes back to the minors, or in this case alternate training camp in San Jose. Check out the MLB Glossary for more details.

The addition of Kaprielian means there will be nine relievers in the pen Tuesday. The games will be started by Frankie Montas and Mike Minor, so the latter won’t be available for relief work as he was on Friday. That leaves Hendriks, Soria, Petit, Diekman, McFarland, Trivino, Weems, Wendelken, and Kaprielian to clean up the rest, though each game will only be seven innings so the workload won’t be as large as a traditional doubleheader.

The 26-year-old Kaprielian made his MLB debut three weeks ago, after overcoming injuries that robbed him of almost three entire minor league seasons. He only got to pitch in one game before being sent back down, but he tossed a pair of innings with just a solo homer and a walk against him, while topping out at an impressive 96.9 mph on the radar.

Oakland might have another big addition on the way, as shortstop Marcus Semien is hopeful to play one of the two games of the doubleheader, reports insider Martin Gallegos. Semien missed the last five games dating back to before the team’s recent coronavirus hiatus due to soreness in his side, breaking a multi-year streak of consecutive games played.

However, third baseman Matt Chapman will not be playing, while the Houston Astros are activating their own star 3B in Alex Bregman. In last year’s AL MVP voting, Bregman finished second and Semien third, so this matchup is getting back some serious star power on both sides after minor injuries.

Here’s the full roster for Tuesday.
