Oakland A’s Series Preview #15, sort of: Mariners host makeup doubleheader

This was supposed to be an off-day, but coronavirus altered the schedule

The Oakland A’s were originally supposed to be off today, ahead of a trip to the high elevation of Colorado. However, their schedule was interrupted at the end of August by the coronavirus, which wiped out a whole three-game series against the Seattle Mariners. Now they’ll use this off-day to make up two of those postponed contests, at T-Mobile Park where they were supposed to be played.

Seattle Mariners

  • 2020 record: 21-25

The Mariners aren’t even trying to win, and yet they’re in third place, and just 1.5 games out of second. The most appropriate response to that sentence is LOL Astros, but also well done to Seattle’s players for continuing to grind and overcome expectations. They’ve gone 14-7 since mid-August, and that’s impressive regardless of the context of the standings.

The hot names over the last couple weeks include Kyle Seager, Jose Marmolejos, Dylan Moore, and Ty France, a combination of players you definitely know, have maybe slightly heard of, and have definitely never heard of. That group has combined for eight homers over the team’s last 10 games.

Meanwhile, the rotation is beginning to get quality starts from Justus Sheffield and Yusei Kikuchi, along with more ace-like work from Marco Gonzales. The bullpen hasn’t blown a save in September even though they traded all their top relievers to the Padres at the deadline. Also, Kendall Graveman is a reliever now, and so far it’s going alright.

Projected lineup

This is for the first game of the doubleheader.

  • SS Dylan Moore (R)
  • 2B Ty France (R)
  • CF Kyle Lewis (R)
  • 3B Kyle Seager (L)
  • 1B Evan White (R)
  • C Luis Torrens (R)
  • RF Phillip Ervin (R)
  • LF Jose Marmolejos (L)
  • DH Tim Lopes (R)

Seager is still there, but Lewis has cooled off — .133 in September with a .462 OPS. Otherwise, the good news is they’ll all have their names written on the backs of their jerseys. Lopes is the 29th man for the twin-bill.

They also have Dee Gordon on the bench, but now he’s Dee Strange-Gordon as of last week, which has been his name this whole time but he just publicly went by the simpler version until now. Talk about rotten luck, though — he can finally bunt against Oakland without fear of Matt Chapman getting him, but the A’s are starting lefty pitchers in each game of the doubleheader (and he’s a lefty hitter) (but does that matter if he just bunts every time?).

Starting pitchers

These are the two expected starters:

  • Mon #1: Marco Gonzales (L) vs. Jesús Luzardo (2:10 p.m.)
  • Mon #2: TBD vs. Mike Minor (5:10 p.m.)

In his last two starts, Gonzales threw a complete game four-hitter to beat the Angels, and then seven innings of two-run ball against the Rangers (total: 16 ip, 15 Ks, 1 BB, 3 runs, 8 hits). The good news is that the A’s have a much better lineup than those other opponents do.
