Mustaches are an iconic part of Oakland A’s history, dating back to the championship days of the 1970s when the green and gold basically invented wearing facial hair in Major League Baseball. The Rollie Fingers handlebars are the most famous example, but there have been many more over the years, up to the present day with Daniel Mengden’s similar twirl.

Last week, A’s mustache lore got its newest chapter, when Matt Olson showed up with some newly trimmed whiskers. He proceeded to homer in his very first at-bat with his new stache, and three times in his next five plate appearances. In the superstitious world of baseball, the stache itself may as well have been the one swinging the bat, because you can bet it’s not going anywhere for a while.

Olson isn’t alone, though. You might not be able to tell yet using the naked eye, but we have inside intelligence that Matt Chapman is growing his own stache to match. It might not turn out to be much more than a Sonny Gray special, but it’s the thought that counts and it should still provide the same superpowers — not that Chaptain America needs any more of those, already armed with his Platinum Glove and thunderous bat.

It remains to be seen if any other A’s will follow the Matts’ lead and sprout their own soup-strainers, but if so then we could have a brand new Mustache Gang on our hands. That worked out pretty well the last time it happened in Oakland. Long live the lip caterpillars!
