Matt Olson made MLB history on Opening Day of the 2020 season. With the Oakland A’s and Los Angeles Angels locked in extra innings, Olson came up with the bases loaded and launched a towering 427-foot drive into the right-field seats. It was a walk-off grand slam, the first time anyone in the majors had done that on Opening Day in 34 years.
But that’s just another day at the office for Olson. He’s already hit 90 career homers in just over two seasons’ worth of games, and this was the third walk-off of his career. The first baseman has as much power as anybody in the sport in his sweet lefty stroke, and he knows how to use it.
He’s every bit as good on the other side of the ball, too. In the top of the 10th, his heads-up defensive play helped keep the Angels off the board, in the first-ever MLB game to use the temporary new rule of putting an automatic runner on second base to start each extra frame. It was yet another example of why he’s won the last two AL Gold Glove awards at first base.
Olson is simply amazing, and he wasted no time proving it again right out the gate of the 2020 season. Whether with his bat or his glove, or often both, at some point in each game he’s likely to leave you channeling your inner Bill King by exclaiming, “Oly Toledo!”
