Oakland A’s trivia: Opening Day lineups from 1980-89

How well do you remember the ‘80s decade?

Oakland Athletics
Billy Martin led the A’s into the 80s, serving as manager from 1980-82.

The 2020 MLB season is on hiatus, and there’s no telling when baseball might start again. In the meantime, let’s play some trivia!

We’re still waiting for MLB to start playing, but this week brought the return of baseball elsewhere in the world. On Tuesday in South Korea, the KBO launched the beginning of their 2020 season, with a full slate of games among the 10-team league.

With an Opening Day being celebrated yesterday, this is a good time to continue our own series of Oakland A’s Opening Day lineups. We’ve already covered the 2010s, the 2000s, and the 1990s, so now it’s time to dial back to the 1980s.

At first I was worried that these older lineups would get too obscure, but upon closer inspection I think that folks will do better than they might initially expect. Of course there are some forgettable randos mixed in just like with any decade, and if you weren’t around to watch these teams then there will be little hope of guessing those guys. But several positions are dominated by relatively well-known names, or at least gettable ones.

Without further ado, let’s get to it! The question is, how many players can you name from the A’s 1980-1989 Opening Day lineups? I have constructed a quiz on the website Sporcle to test your knowledge, with the following instructions:

  • You can go in any order, with 10 minutes to fill 100 spaces.
  • You only need to type the last names to register the answers.
  • However, you do have to spell them right!
  • Read the next paragraph about how to not spoil the answers for everyone else in the comments section.

Share your results in the comments, BUT DON’T SPOIL ANYTHING!! There is an option in the comments for ”spoiler text,” which will black out that particular text until the reader puts their mouse over it to reveal it. If you are going to share right/wrong answers, please use the spoiler option. It’s on the row of options like bold, italics, etc., all the way on the right side, in between the option to add a hyperlink and the option to add a smiley face; it looks like a black square.

Alrighty, here is the quiz! It’s embedded below, or you can click here to play it on Sporcle’s site.

How did you do? Are there any that you can’t believe you missed?
