Oakland A’s trivia: Opening Day lineups from 1970-79

How well do you remember the ‘70s decade?

The 2020 MLB season is on hiatus, and there’s no telling when baseball might start again. In the meantime, let’s play some trivia!

During this lockdown without baseball, we’ve taken quite a few looks back at Oakland A’s history. That includes this trivia series, in which we’ve asked about the A’s Opening Day lineups for the decades of the 2010s, the 2000s, the 1990s, and the 1980s. Now it’s time to dial it back yet another decade, to the 1970s.

Of course, this is a particularly special decade, as it includes the squad that won three straight World Series championships. On the other hand, it was also 40-50 years ago, which means that alongside the legendary stars there will be some rando players whose names have been lost to the infield dirt of time. But missing the name of a player you’ve never heard of just gives you a chance to look him up and learn about him! There are also a few big names who were major stars for other teams before catching on for a year or two in Oakland.

Without further ado, let’s get to it! The question is, how many players can you name from the A’s 1970-1979 Opening Day lineups? I have constructed a quiz on the website Sporcle to test your knowledge, with the following instructions:

  • You can go in any order, with 10 minutes to fill 97 spaces (no DH from 1970-72).
  • You only need to type the last names to register the answers.
  • However, you do have to spell them right!
  • Read the next paragraph about how to not spoil the answers for everyone else in the comments section.

Share your results in the comments, BUT DON’T SPOIL ANYTHING!! There is an option in the comments for ”spoiler text,” which will black out that particular text until the reader puts their mouse over it to reveal it. If you are going to share right/wrong answers, please use the spoiler option. It’s on the row of options like bold, italics, etc., all the way on the right side, in between the option to add a hyperlink and the option to add a smiley face; it looks like a black square.

DON’T BE THAT PERSON WHO SPOILS THE ANSWERS IN THE COMMENTS.

Alrighty, here is the quiz! It’s embedded below, or you can click here to play it on Sporcle’s site.

How did you do? Are there any that you can’t believe you missed?
