Today in Baseball History:
- 2004 — Connecting off Jake Peavy’s 3rd-inning slider at SBC Park, Barry Bonds hits his 700th career home run. The historic homer touches off a fireworks display and the unfurling of a gigantic light-tower banner featuring Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron, the two other players to reach the milestone.
- 2011 — Mariano Rivera ties Trevor Hoffman’s Major League record with his 602nd career save in the Yankees’ 7 - 6 win over the Blue Jays. Rivera is backed by home runs from Alex Rodriguez, playing in his first game since aggravating a wrist injury on September 9th, and Curtis Granderson, who becomes the first Yankees CF since Mickey Mantle in 1961 to hit 40 home runs in a season.
Best of Twitter:
- Marcus Semien is clearly the best leadoff hitter in A’s history...
— Oakland A's (@Athletics) September 17, 2019
- Murphy showed off his cannon on Monday night...
A's rookie Sean Murphy caught the speedy Adalberto Mondesi stealing second with an 87.4 mph throw. It's the fastest throw Statcast has ever tracked from an A's catcher (since 2015).
— Andrew Simon (@AndrewSimonMLB) September 17, 2019
Murphy's 1.91 second pop time was well below the MLB average (2.01).
- This A’s team seems to have fantastic chemistry...
Seems like every new veteran who joins the A’s pretty much says the same thing as Roark said here. The clubhouse is just different. https://t.co/GoL2Tj5JNl pic.twitter.com/UlhTkWYENt
