Game Thread #136: A’s at Yankees

MLB: Oakland Athletics at New York Yankees
Aug 30, 2019, Bronx: Oakland Athletics celebrate after defeating the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Well my goodness. Another win against the Yankees last night. Home runs from Profar and Semien. Strong pitching from Brett Anderson and Yusmeiro Petit. Today is the day to keep that going and win this three game series and then go for the sweep tomorrow. (Knock, knock, knock.) Possible? But of course!

Here’s what we have today:

  • Homer Bailey is taking the mound, and he’s been great in his last three starts! Don’t look at the 5.52 season ERA. Look at the last three games: 1.93. He’s settling in. Not much in the way of matchup stats with the Yankees since 2019 is his first year in the AL.
  • Yankees pitcher Domingo German has won 5 of his last 6 games. Who did he lose to? The Athletics! German was pelted with six runs (5 earned) as the A’s took him to task and gave him a tally slash in the loss column on August 20th.
  • Seth Brown’s bat is still red hot, and he’ll be covering the left field terrain.
  • Meanwhile, Jurickson Profar—Mr. I’m-All-That right now—is in the DH position in the latter part of the order.
  • Rookie Sheldon Neuse will mind the store at second base. He’s 0-3 in his start with the A’s (and his career), and we will get more of a sense of him as he settles in. Today could be the day of his first big-league hit. Always a joy to see that happen! Fingers crossed.

On a note about tomorrow’s game, this just popped up from Susan Slusser which gives Mike Fiers another day off:
