Today in Baseball History:

  • 1945 — In game two of a doubleheader against the Reds, 37-year-old slugger Jimmie Foxx makes his first major league start, pitching the first seven innings for the Philadelphia Phillies. He leaves with a 4 - 1 lead, and Andy Karl saves Foxx’s only decision, a 6 - 2 final. Double X’s ERA in 10 appearances is 1.52. The lidlifter goes to the Phils as well, 5 - 0, though they are mathematically eliminated from a 1st place finish.
  • 2010 — The specter of the 2000s steroid scandal is still around. Today, former pitching great Roger Clemens is indicted on six counts of perjury for allegedly lying during Congressional hearings on PED use in February 2008 when he testified that he had never used banned substances. A number of former teammates and associates have since come forward to provide testimony that contradicts his statements made under oath.

  • This is awesome...
  • Matt Olson has been huge for the A’s this year — imagine if he hadn’t missed over a month...
  • Some encouraging injury updates...

Note: An (L) at the end of a link indicates a ‘light’ paywall, such as that of the San Francisco Chronicle, which allows a certain number of free reads each month. A ($) indicates a ‘hard’ paywall, such as that of The Athletic, which requires a membership to read any article. I am very open to feedback — let me know if you have another idea that you like better!
