Game Thread #91: A’s at Mariners

MLB: Oakland Athletics at St. Louis Cardinals Jeff Curry-USA TODAY Sports

Good evening and happy Saturday night! You get a double-dip of baseballgirl for this weekend’s festivities; since the A’s won a terrific game last night, we can only hope tonight’s can be just as good.

The A’s are officially rolling; they are 8-2 in their last 10 games, they have closed the gap in the West to just 6.5 games and they are right on the cusp of both Wild Card positions with just two games to go before the All Star Break. And, once again, they’re doing it with a non-flashy, virtually-no-name starting pitching staff that just keeps getting the job done, night after night.

Much in the same way that the summer of 2018 was surreal; so far the summer of 2019 is heading along the same path, where the playoffs feel more real than just a dream, and indeed, it’s a coin flip. Yes, the A’s will have stiff competition down the stretch (keep in mind, Boston is currently chasing the A’s), but they are in the mix, and on a cooler summer night in early July before this second game of the series, that’s the most anyone could hope for. Baseball is meant to be enjoyed for six glorious months out of the year; and this unexpected, amazing run deserves our full attention.

A’s will throw Chris Bassitt out tonight as their starting pitcher, facing off against Marco Gonzales.
