- 1862 — A crowd of 40,000 watches two teams of imprisoned Union Army soldiers play baseball at Hilton Head, South Carolina. Civil War historians are debating the actual size of the crowd.
- 1958 — Rickey Henderson is born in Chicago, Illinois. Henderson will break into the major leagues with the Oakland Athletics in 1979, and will go on to become one of the greatest leadoff men in history before being elected to the Hall of Fame in 2009.
