Today in Baseball History:
- 1884 — The American Association votes to keep its ban on overhand pitching and to continue to allow fouls caught on one bounce to count as outs. It does abolish the tradition of team captains flipping for the honor of batting first. Now the home team will automatically bat first.
- 1987 — The A’s obtain Jesse Orosco from the Mets and then trade the southpaw reliever along with shortstop Alfredo Griffin and right-hander Jay Howell to the Dodgers for pitchers Matt Young, Bob Welch and Jack Savage. New York gets Savage as well as right-handed hurlers Wally Whitehurst and Kevin Tapani from Oakland to complete the three-team, eight-player deal.

- Wonder who that one free agent might be — Holt? Sogard?
Billy Beane suggested today that if the A's add a second baseman, it's more likely to be via a trade than free agency. Maybe one FA piquing their interest at that spot.

Largest pitching contracts, MLB history
— Devan Fink (@DevanFink) December 11, 2019
1. Gerrit Cole — $324 million
2. Stephen Strasburg — $245 million
3. David Price — $217 million
4. Clayton Kershaw — $215 million
5. Max Scherzer — $210 million
6. Zack Greinke — $206.5 million
Gerrit Cole’s total guarantee breaks David Price’s previous record for a pitcher by *$107M.* His average annual value of $36M is also a record for a pitcher, and matches Mike Trout’s AAV in the new money he received in his extension with the #Angels.
