- 1987 - Oakland’s Mark McGwire slugs his 39th home run of the season, off Don Sutton in the 6th inning, in a 12-inning, 7 - 6, win over California, breaking the major-league record for rookies shared by Wally Berger and Frank Robinson. McGwire will finish the season with a then-whopping 49 homers.

The best way I can explain difference in the minors from 1998 to 2018. In 1998, teams wouldn't have promoted Eloy vs. Vlad Jr. as an event because too few fans would have cared. Now it's an obvious promotion that will bring fans out. And they'll buy shirseys when they are there.
