The Oakland A’s called up pitcher Frankie Montas on Tuesday, the team announced. He will start the evening’s game in Texas. To make room on the roster, infielder Franklin Barreto was optioned down to Triple-A Nashville.

We last saw Montas on July 9, when he tossed six scoreless innings against the Astros. However, he was sent down the next day because the team didn’t need him to start again until after the All-Star break. In the meantime they’ve carried an extra body on the bench, but now they need a fifth starter once more and so Montas is back in the picture.

Montas, 2018: 3.35 ERA, 48⅓ ip, 30 Ks, 15 BB, 2 HR, 3.51 FIP

The big right-hander is having an unexpectedly good season in the rotation, and if he keeps it up then it could be an outright breakout. He doesn’t generate a lot of strikeouts despite his mid-90s heat, but he’s finding ways to keep runs off the board (low BB, HR) and efficiently eating lots of innings along the way (six per start). That latter point is crucial for a staff that has struggled to get long outings from its starters, leaving the bullpen to pick up the extra workload.

The full rotation now features Sean Manaea, Edwin Jackson, Trevor Cahill, Brett Anderson, and Montas. The A’s also have Daniel Mengden healthy and ready to go in Triple-A if/when needed (7 ip, 2 runs in his last start for Nashville) as well as Chris Bassitt (7 ip, 1 run last week in Nashville). Montas made his last start in Triple-A as well, last Tuesday while the MLB club was on break, and he threw five scoreless innings (79 pitches).

Heading out for now is Barreto. He was called up just before the break when fellow infielder Jed Lowrie had a brief injury scare, but he only ended up making one start (this past Sunday) and racking up four plate appearances (one hit). The 22-year-old top talent will now return to Triple-A and continue his development.

Barreto, 2018 MLB: .214/.241/.429, 80 wRC+, 3 HR, 1.7% BB, 41.4% Ks, in 58 PAs
