Today in Baseball History:
- 1964 - A’s rookie Bert Campaneris sends Minnesota to defeat, 4 - 3, with two home runs in his major league debut. The first comes on the first pitch thrown to him, by Jim Kaat, making him just the second American League player to debut like that. And the 21-year-old Cuban joins Bob Nieman as the only player since 1900 with two home runs in his first major league game.
- 1978 - Reggie Jackson returns to the team and the Yankees win their 5th straight, 3 - 1, over the White Sox. At the Chicago airport, Billy Martin, reacting to reporters’ questions about Jackson and George Steinbrenner, replies: “The two deserve each other. One’s a born liar; the other’s convicted.” The remarks will cost Billy his job. The next day, Martin resigns under pressure, giving way to Bob Lemon after a one-game interim by Dick Howser.

- Who you got in this race?
Some postgame tidbits: I asked Lucroy if he was ok after getting pinch run for and he said yes, Bob Melvin told him Josh Phegley is faster than him. “We’re going to have to race, because I don’t believe that,” Lucroy said with a laugh.

- Nola is a guy who, despite pitching in an East coast baseball market, never gets enough credit...
Aaron Nola’s 32 start pace

206 innings pitched
19-5 / 2.30 ERA
209 K / 56 BB / 10 HR
That could be Cy Young-worthy.
- Seriously...
