Oakland A’s reportedly interested in starter Mike Fiers

The Oakland A’s have expressed interest in Tigers starting pitcher Mike Fiers, reported Jon Morosi of MLB Network on Sunday. He says the two sides haven’t had serious talks yet, though. Morosi also cited a previous report by Chris McCosky of Detroit News linking Oakland to the hurler.

It’s no secret the A’s are in the market for starting pitching at this year’s trade deadline. They’re in postseason contention despite a disappointing season for their current rotation, and so beefing up the staff with another veteran starter could be a big help. In the meantime, with prices looking high, they settled for adding a new lockdown reliever over the weekend (Mets closer Jeurys Familia), but there could still be more moves coming.

The right-handed Fiers was once acquired by the 2015 Astros when they were in a similar upstart-contender situation, and he helped them quite a bit down the stretch. However, he struggled for Houston in 2016-17 and was non-tendered last winter. He wound up with the Tigers and has enjoyed a bounce-back this summer.

Fiers, 2018: 3.49 ERA, 111 ip, 82 Ks, 24 BB, 18 HR, 4.57 FIP

He’s not a hard-thrower, averaging around 90 mph on his fastball and topping out at 93, but he has a wide arsenal. He’s always been homer-prone, but if there’s one stadium that can help mask that flaw it’s the Coliseum. He also has one more year of team control in 2019, which will affect his acquisition price. We’ll take a closer look if a deal actually happens, but those are the basics.

There could be competition for Fiers’ services, though. There are “a bunch of teams evaluating” him, reports Buster Olney of ESPN, and he mentions the Red Sox as one of them. That’s not necessarily a dealbreaker, as many clubs had checked in on Familia too before Oakland landed him, but it’s a relevant consideration. The more buyers involved, the more of a bidding war that can take place.

Of course, Fiers isn’t the only starter out there, just the one with the most public rumor attached. Susan Slusser of the S.F. Chronicle previously mentioned Lance Lynn and Jake Odorizzi of the Twins, and she also noted that the A’s had been interested in Detroit hurler Michael Fulmer before he got hurt last week. However, one consistent report (including in that first Slusser link) is that they’re not currently expected to go after a big-ticket name like Jacob deGrom.
