- 1941 - The New York Giants become the first team to wear protective headgear as they used plastic helmets in a game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 2013 - The Astros take Stanford University pitcher Mark Appel with the first overall pick in the 2013 amateur draft; Appel was a first-round selection in the 2012 draft, by the Pirates, but failed to come to terms. The Cubs follow by taking third baseman Kris Bryant from the University of San Diego. 15 of the top 20 picks are spent on pitchers.

We have a long way to go, but Bryce Harper isn't having a monster walk year to this point. A .227/.365/.517 slash line and a 1.2 WAR (the same as Christian Villanueva). Harper ranks 32nd in #MLB with a .365 wOBA and 37th in wRC+. He has some work to do. #Nationals

Manny Machado, in contrast: A .326/.395/.626 slash line and a 2.5 WAR. Machado ranks 5th in baseball with a .422 wOBA and 5th in wRC+. He's been steady offensively despite moving to SS and playing for a team that's 18-41. If a good platform year helps, he's doing his part.
