Oakland A’s place Boog Powell on DL, call up Mark Canha

The outfield depth is already coming in handy.

The Oakland A’s placed outfielder Boog Powell on the disabled list Sunday morning, reports Susan Slusser of the S.F. Chronicle. To replace him on the roster, they called up OF/1B Mark Canha from Triple-A Nashville.

Powell sprained his knee during Friday’s game, reports Slusser. He had been serving as the primary CF in the early going, but was off to a slow start at the plate at just 4-for-24. It’s not yet clear how serious the injury is.

Canha had an excellent spring, with an 1.104 OPS and four homers in 52 plate appearances. He also homered and doubled in Nashville’s season opener on Thursday. The 29-year-old has appeared in Oakland in each of the last three seasons, grading out as roughly replacement-level overall in 197 games (716 plate appearances).

The loss of Powell leaves the A’s with a hole in CF until top prospect Dustin Fowler is ready to take over. However, they now have a trio of stopgap options in the meantime — Jake Smolinski, Trayce Thompson, and Canha. Slusser also notes that top prospect and current backup infielder Franklin Barreto could be in the mix for the outfield too, after being called up on Saturday.

All of those options are right-handed, and none is ideal. Smolinski is best in a platoon role facing only left-handed pitchers, and Thompson has a reputation as a plus defender but has to prove he can hit at all after a horrendous 2017. Canha is a questionable option in CF but has seen occasional time there in the past on an emergency basis. However, all of that is better than nothing as Oakland tries not to rush Fowler up prematurely.

The presence of Canha also gives the A’s a backup 1B with experience at the position. The previous backup had been utilityman Chad Pinder, but he went on the disabled list on Saturday.

Welcome back, Mark! Feel better soon, Boog!
