Oakland A’s place Ryan Buchter on DL, call up Danny Coulombe

The Oakland A’s placed left-handed reliever Ryan Buchter on the 10-day disabled list Friday with a strained shoulder, the team announced. To replace him on the roster, fellow southpaw Danny Coulombe was recalled from Triple-A Nashville. In an additional, expected move, right-handed reliever Yusmeiro Petit was activated from the bereavement list.

Buchter has been an important part of the A’s bullpen this year. He’s the top lefty in the pen and at times the only one, and he’s also found himself in a late-inning setup role. He’s been in four save/hold situations and converted all of them (all holds). However, he left Wednesday’s game against the Rangers after just one batter, in visible discomfort.

Buchter, 2018: 1.69 ERA, 10⅔ ip, 11 Ks, 4 BB, 1 HR, 3.46 FIP

In his place, Coulombe rejoins the team. The 28-year-old hasn’t been sharp in his fourth season with the A’s, allowing runs in four of the last five games he pitched before being sent down a week ago. His last game came in the 14-inning marathon against the White Sox last week, in which he threw 38 pitches, and that extended outing may also have been a factor in his demotion at a moment when Oakland needed fresh arms.

Coulombe, 2018: 5.79 ERA, 9⅓ ip, 7 Ks, 5 BB, 2 HR, 6.07 FIP

On the bright side, he’s stranded all seven of his inherited runners. He did enter one save/hold situation but didn’t retire any batters nor give up the lead himself, so there was no result to his opportunity either way.

Finally, Petit is back on the roster after taking a few days off for personal reasons. The A’s sent down two pitchers on Thursday and only added one (new acquisition Wilmer Font), so there was one roster spot left open and it was widely expected to be earmarked for Petit. Now that is officially the case.
