An Easy Solution to Finding the Next A's Radio Home

Now that A’s twitter has pretty much confirmed that they’re leaving 95.7, it’s time to find a new flagship station. Instead of searching for a new one, the A’s actually already have one right at their doorstep—KHTK 1140. Yes, I realize it’s a Sacramento-based station, but you can get it clearly in Gilroy, and I’ve gotten it as far south as King City and Salinas during the night. It’s coverage map shows that it’s available in the entire East Bay. Now, I’ve only listened to 1140 while driving from far away places to listen to the A’s a couple of times, but from what I’ve heard, they talk about the A’s, unlike 95.7. The A's already have trouble getting air time on sports talk radio, and it might be better just to expand the station that already talks about them, rather than finding a new one. Since reception is a bit spotty in places like San Jose, maybe the best idea is to find a Bay Area FM station to simulcast 1140, similar to how San Luis Obispo’s ESPN 1280 has a north county FM affiliate. Of course, the simulcast affiliate doesn't have to FM, but the reception is a lot clearer than AM, and many people that don't have hand-held radios have smaller devices, such as iPods or mp3 players that have FM radios built into them, which are also much easier to carry around.

Even if this isn't the option the A's move forward with, I trust Chris and Dave to make the right decision for our radio future.
