Today in Baseball History:

  • 1946 - Teams approve the change to a 168 game schedule. The decision will be rescinded in September.
  • 1961 - Roger Maris becomes the first player to hit his 50th homerun in August.
  • 1989 - Oakland defeats the Texas Rangers 2-0. The game is better known for Nolan Ryan’s fifth inning strikeout of Ricky Henderson, which marked Ryan’s 5,000th.
  • 2007 - Ten years ago, the Orioles lost 30-3 (to the Rangers). Perhaps an anniversary repeat?
