Chris Smith’s rise to relative success was extremely unlikely and totally awesome. He doesn’t take anything too seriously.
When asked how he responds to coaching visits to the mound in sticky situations, he told Susan Slusser: “I don’t know! I want to be in the dugout! I don’t want to be here. I want to go home! Bases loaded and no outs, you know?’”
What a guy.
He last pitched four innings in relief against the Giants, during which he unfortunately gave up Ty Blach’s first major league homer. Before that he gave up four runs in five innings, and before that, three runs in six. But, before THAT, he threw seven innings of one-run ball (but still lost...). So, this could really go a number of ways.
Wade Miley has been getting progressively worse all year. He was pretty stellar through his first 11 starts, but has been in a rough stretch since early June, which bodes well.
We’ll have to wait at least another night for Chris Davis and Khris Davis to face off in-person.
First pitch is at 7:05! Chris Smith is due for his first win as a starter.
