For those A's fanatics who derived more enjoyment from following the first two days of the MLB Draft than they have from watching the major league team drop 5 of their previous 6 games, we have good news: a second round selection from three years ago will be making his debut this morning in Miami.
Daniel Gossett was the weekend starter in both his sophomore and junior seasons at Clemson, where he had a 23-9 record, two saves, three shutouts, and a 2.80 ERA while striking out 285 batters in 282 innings. Those 285 strikeouts place him 7th all time in Clemson history.
After being selected by the A's with the 65th overall pick, Gossett has tossed 383 innings through all levels of the A's minor league system, going 19-22 with a 3.55 ERA while striking out 342 (8.0 K/9) opposing batters.
Thus far in 2017, Gossett is 3-3 with a 3.41 ERA in Nashville. He most recently picked up a loss on June 5th, allowing 4 runs in 7 innings for the Sounds, but prior to that, he had tossed 14 innings over two starts without allowing an earned run. He struck out 14 and didn't issue a walk while picking up a win in each contest.
After hitting well against the Rays in St. Peterburg, A's hitters managed just 3 hits against the Marlins yesterday and will look to get back on track against Edinson Volquez (3-7, 3.41 ERA).
Volquez is 3-4 with a 4.82 ERA in 7 career starts against Oakland.
