The World Series is over, and that means free agency is on the horizon. The first rumblings began on Thursday, when 149 MLB players became free agents.
The list is ever-increasing because there are still decisions to be made on contract options — not everyone will get picked up like Oakland’s Jed Lowrie, and some guys have their own player-options to consider. Keep checking back for updates over the coming days.
As a point of interest, the A’s are the only club without a free agent on this list. That speaks to the success they had in capitalizing on their expiring contracts, and not letting anyone walk away for free during a losing campaign amid a larger rebuild. In this case, they sent away Yonder Alonso for a legit youngster, and shipped Rajai Davis and Adam Rosales to playoff teams in exchange for low-level prospects (hey, better than nothing).
Since 2015, the only MLB players the A’s have let reach free agency are: Edward Mujica (tank commander), Barry Zito (he retired), Sam Fuld (never signed again; now retired), and Ross Detwiler (A’s ended up re-signing him). Note: That doesn’t count any players who were outrighted off the 40-man and elected free agency instead of minor league assignment, such as Chris Smith this year or Henderson Alvarez last year.
Alright, without further ado, here’s the full free agent list so far, courtesy of the MLBPA press release.
UPDATE: As more players join the list due to declined options (via @MLBRosterMoves and @MLBTradeRumors), I will add them, with asterisks** to denote the new additions. Players with a (QO) after their names were issued qualifying offers by their clubs. Last updated Nov. 6 at 1:30 p.m. PT.
