The Oakland A’s made a pair of roster moves on Monday, and one non-move.
Billy Butler was placed on the 7-day concussion DL, the team announced. The injury comes as a result of his clubhouse fight with teammate Danny Valencia. Butler is expected to need 5-7 days to recover, according to John Shea of the S.F. Chronicle, but of course you can never be absolutely sure when it comes to head injuries.
To take Butler’s spot on the roster, utilityman Arismendy Alcantara was called up from Triple-A Nashville. He is on the bench for Monday’s game, where he is the only available backup middle infielder. In his most recent stint in Nashville (24 games, since late-July), he batted .284/.345/.529 with 4 HR (13 XBH), 9 BB, and 30 Ks in 113 PAs. He’s played five games for the A’s, during which he went 3-for-13 with seven strikeouts.
Finally, shortstop Marcus Semien is at the hospital awaiting the birth of his child, says John Hickey of the Bay Area News Group. At the moment it appears that he has not been put on paternity leave, as he is still listed on the lineup card. It’s unclear if or when the team will still put him on leave (min 1 game, max 3 games) especially now that Alcantara and Chad Pinder are already here anyway to fill in for him in the short-term. Either way, all the best to Semien and his family as they welcome a new person into the world. We’ll figure out the baseball stuff later.
