The Oakland A’s called up utility man Arismendy Alcantara from Triple-A Nashville ahead of Wednesday’s contest against the Houston Astros, sending down Tuesday starter Dillon Overton to make room on the 25-man roster. The A’s played without a backup middle infielder on Tuesday after optioning Tyler Ladendorf to make room for Overton to start.
The A’s will need a fifth starter on Sunday, with the A’s hoping that Hill will be recovered from his blister issue by then (via Susan Slusser, San Francisco Chronicle). If not, Hill could be a disabled list candidate to allow Overton to be recalled inside of the normal 10-day minimum stay in the minor leagues.
Alcantara has been on a hot streak since returning to the Nashville Sounds at the start of July. In his last 13 games, Alcantara has hit .377/.397/.508 with a home run and five doubles in 64 plate appearances. With the A’s this year, Alcantara is 2-for-8 with four strikeouts and is 2-for-3 in stolen base attempts.
On Tuesday, Dillon Overton enjoyed a good start, striking out six and walking none in 6 1/3 innings while allowing three runs for his first career quality start in three tries.
