The Athletics have activated catcher Josh Phegley from the 15-day disabled list and optioned catcher Matt McBride to Triple-A Nashville. Phegley last played for the A's on May 9 before he was forced to get a cortisone shot for right knee inflammation.
Phegley made five rehab appearances for the Nashville Sounds between Saturday and Wednesday, three times behind the plate. He went 6-for-19 with a double, six strikeouts, and four walks.
Matt McBride made eight appearances for the A's, starting four games at catcher and one game at DH. He was 4-for-18 with a double, a walk, and four strikeouts.
The A's have 11 players on the disabled list, now, and the next potential return could be Sonny Gray. He played catch on Thursday (Ken Rosenthal, Fox Sports) and is eligible to be activated on June 6. After that, Josh Reddick could be looking at a return in late June. Henderson Alvarez's status remains up in the air, as it's not clear how much he has to "start over" on his rehab after getting shut down for shoulder soreness almost two weeks ago.
