Joaquin Andujar dies, age 62

Andujar died from complications from diabetes.

I remember (youse guys, mostly not alive!) back in the 1980s, when the Athletics traded for Andujar. I really did not like him. Sandy Alderson was GM then, and he overpaid on salary ($1.3million back then) for a 33 year old guy. I think deals such as this feed into Alderson's current thinking: no overpaying for 30-yr-old-plus!

I went to an Athletics/Red Sox game on April 28, 1987, where Andujar got thrown out of the game in the second inning, after he hit Jim Rice. Emergency pitcher! Who came in, but newly-acquired Dennis Eckersley! who pitched six innings, two hits, one run, and got the win as the Athletics beat the Rent Sox, 7-1.

It was a day game, and I went early to watch batting practice. I'll never forget Jose Canseco and Luis Polonia strolling onto the field, and warming up playing catch. The size difference was amazing...like two different species!
