Game Thread #32: Oakland Athletics at Seattle Mariners

New, comments

Oakland looks to end their skid, sending Jesse Hahn to the hill to take on J.A. Happ and the Mariners.

Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

Nothing has gone right for Oakland at all over these past few days. The Athletics didn't seem to gain any momentum despite winning a series at Texas, following that up by losing three out of four at Minnesota and losing the opener of the series in Seattle late Friday night. The A's wasted another great outing by Sonny Gray, and hope that Jesse Hahn won't suffer the same fate.

Hahn has had an up-and-down season for Oakland thus far. He has yet to go deeper than six innings in a start, but also hasn't gone less than five. Hahn's ERA is a nasty 4.33, but his FIP of 3.23 indicates that he may be throwing better than perceived. Jesse has seemed to trade strikeouts for command in 2015 - his BB/9 has dropped from 3.93 in 2014 to 1.33 this year, and his K/9 has dropped from 8.59 to 5.33. In all, Hahn has been a bit of an enigma in 2015, and tonight he looks to right the ship against a Mariners squad ranked 26th in scoring.

Throwing for the Mariners will be left-hander J.A. Happ. Happ had been very impressive and very consistent on the young season, but he ran into a hot Astros lineup his last time out, giving up six earned runs over six innings. However, despite a two-MPH dip in average fastball velocity, Happ has thrown well for a Mariners team in need of consistent arms.

If you're having trouble finding enthusiasm for tonight's contest, I don't blame you - despite all of the new faces, not much has changed result-wise from the dog days at the end of 2014. The A's have lost countless games so far just because of one pitch, or one error, or one call, or one swing. I can't promise you tonight will be different, but I can promise you one thing - this team shouldn't be this bad. The team as a whole has underperformed, meaning they're more than due for positive regression. It starts tonight in Seattle! Let's go, Oakland!
