How do I read Roman numerals?
This will be the last year the NFL uses Roman numerals to denote which edition of the Super Bowl is being played. Still, here is how to read them. First, your basics:
- I = 1
- V = 5
- X = 10
- L = 50
- C = 100
The basic rules for reading are:
- No letter should repeat more than three times.
- If a smaller value letter is placed before a larger value one, subtract the smaller value from the larger value, then continue adding the rest.
This year is Super Bowl XLIX. Here, you have an X before an L, so subtract 10 from 50, that's 40. Then continue. You have an I before an X, so subtract one from 10, that's 9. So 40 + 9 = 49. This year is Super Bowl 49.
Why not just Super Bowl IL? Hey, you did not ask me how to write Roman numerals.
What fun things are your Athletics doing to celebrate the Super Bowl?
