Sonny Gray was named a finalist for the 2015 American League Cy Young Award by the Baseball Writers Association of America. He joins Houston Astros starting pitcher Dallas Keuchel and Tigers and Blue Jays starter David Price in the top three vote earners for the award given to the best pitcher in each league.
Gray's star faded just a little bit in the final month of the season, where a September ERA of 6.84 sent his ERA crashing all the way to 2.73, third behind Price (2.45) and Keuchel (2.48). Gray had a 2.04 ERA as late as August 17.
None of the top three strikeout throwers, Chris Sale (274), Chris Archer (252), Corey Kluber (245), earned top 3 honors in the Cy Young voting. David Price leads among the finalists with 225, then Keuchel with 216 and Gray with 169.
And oh yeah, win-loss record. Gray went 14-7 on the year, compared to Keuchel's 20-8 and Price's 18-5.
The winner of the Cy Young Award in each league will be revealed on November 18.
