Both Eric Sogard and Fernando Abad will avoid arbitration hearings after reaching one-year deals on Friday. Tyler Clippard and Jarrod Parker are the A's two remaining arbitration-eligible players.
Sogard settles for $1,075,000
Second baseman Eric Sogard reached an agreement to avoid arbitration with the Oakland Athletics Friday, settling on a one-year deal for $1,075,000, according to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman. Sogard, 28, had filed a request of $1,425,000 against the club's offer of $900,000. The settlement is below the midpoint of $1,162,500, and slightly above the $1,000,000 projected by Matt Swartz for MLB Trade Rumors.
Must Reads
For someone who has consistently been rumored as the next man sent to Triple-A once the A's find a better second baseman, reaching arbitration is a pretty big deal. While certainly anybody that makes a major league 40-man roster is not starving, the financial certainty of reaching arbitration for the first time cannot be underestimated. Sogard talked about living within his family's means in an interview with Cliff Goldstein of NerdWallet (really!) last April, "You're not going to be playing this game forever-you could stop playing this game in the next year, and you're hit with all this debt."
Abad gets $1,087,500
Reliever Fernando Abad has settled for $1,087,500, according to Jeff Todd of MLB Trade Rumors. News that Abad had reached a settlement was first reported by Joe Stiglich of CSN California.
Like Sogard, this was Abad's first year of arbitration eligibility. Abad had filed for $1,225,000 and the team filed for $850,000, for a settlement just above the midpoint of $1,037,500. The final contract is above the Matt Swartz estimate of $900,000 and below my estimate of $1,400,000.
