Athletics shortstop Andy Parrino cleared outright waivers and has been assigned to Triple-A Nashville, the team announced in a press release. Parrino, 29, was designated for assignment on January 10 to clear space on the 40-man roster for arrivals Ben Zobrist and Yunel Escobar from the Tampa Bay Rays.
Parrino will receive an invitation to spring training, and the glove-first switch-hitting infielder appears to be in competition with 40-man rostered players Eric Sogard and Tyler Ladendorf for the role of backup infielder behind Ben Zobrist, Marcus Semien, and Brett Lawrie. Non-roster invitee Joe Wendle may also factor.
