In acquiring Tyler Clippard from the Washington Nations for Yunel Escobar, the Athletics made their ninth trade involving their 27th unique player:

  1. With the Pirates: International slot money for (1) Ike Davis
  2. Blue Jays: (2) Josh Donaldson for (3) Sean Nolin, (4) Brett Lawrie, (5) Kendall Graveman, and (6) Franklin Barreto
  3. Indians: (7) Brandon Moss for (8) Joe Wendle
  4. White Sox: (9) Jeff Samardzija and (10) Michael Ynoa for (11) Chris Bassitt, (12) Josh Phegley, (13) Rangel Ravelo, and (14) Marcus Semien
  5. Rockies: (15) Austin House for (16) Mark Canha
  6. Diamondbacks: cash considerations for (17) Eury De La Rosa
  7. Padres: (18) Derek Norris and (19) Seth Streich for (20) Jesse Hahn and (21) R.J. Alvarez
  8. Rays: (22) Boog Powell, (23) Daniel Robertson, and (24) John Jaso for (25) Ben Zobrist and (26) Yunel Escobar
  9. Nationals: (26 again) Yunel Escobar for (27) Tyler Clippard

The deal bringing Clippard to Oakland adds another arbitration case for the A's to deal with, likely at $9.3 million, while the subtraction of Escobar deletes $5 million for a net $4.3 million increase in payroll:

# $millions
Contracts 6 47.78
Arb settlements 3 6.585
Nick Punto 1 2.75
payment to TB 1 1.5
Remaining arbitrations 9 22.0
Pre-arb players 8 4.1
Total 28 84.715

Speculation about renewed interest in Cuban second baseman Hector Olivera resumes:

Eight, eight generations! Ah! Ah! Ah!

Somehow, my 40-man transit map has yet to go completely off the rails with the addition of a separate Tyler Clippard station:

Going through John Jaso, that makes Tyler Clippard an eighth-generation Athletic:

  1. Ben Grieve, A.J. Hinch, and Angel Berroa were traded for
  2. Johnny Damon, who was traded for
  3. Nick Swisher, who was traded for
  4. Gio Gonzalez, who was traded for
  5. A.J. Cole, who was traded for
  6. John Jaso, who was traded for
  7. Yunel Escobar, who was traded for
  8. Tyler Clippard.
