Well, we made it through an entire Fantasy Baseball season. We've played 19 contests and the regular season will be completes next week. It's been a long season with many crazy injuries to deal with, slumping stars and some breakout players that hopefully will continue doing their thing for years to come. The following question came in this week.
Dear Phil,
My team is in seventh place in my standard head to head point's league. Do you have any advice for me so I can maybe make the playoffs?
Thanks for the question.
If your team or teams is on the bubble (5th thru 8th place) you might want to consider dropping any players on the disabled list that are sitting on your bench apart from your disabled list taking up a roster spot. That includes pitchers as well.
Don't be afraid to stream pitchers this coming week. In a head to head points league pitchers are going to generally be worth more in terms of points on a given outing than a position player so try your best to get as many starting pitchers as you can in the starting lineup every single day.
Check your waiver wire daily. People panic and drop guys who have a bad day and don't be afraid to take a chance or two. You have nothing to lose and a possible championship to gain. Good luck.
Injuries
Garrett Richards Angels: Out for the season with a torn Patella Tendon.
Edwin Jackson Cubs: Placed on the 15 day DL on Thursday with with a right lat strain.
Nick Swisher Cleveland: Out for the season and had surgery on both knees Wednesday.
Waiver Wire Picks for this Week
Steve Pearce 1B OF DH Orioles: Pearce had an awesome April-June and then went in the tank but during his last seven games he's on a bit of a tear going 7-19 and hitting 2 bombs. (stats)
Matt Shoemaker SP RP Angels: Shoemaker has won his last three ballgames and will take the bump on Tuesday night against the visiting Marlins. In his last 13.1 innings he's had an ERA of 1.35 and a WHIP of 0.53 plus 15 strikeouts to boot. (stats)
Jason Vargas SP Royals: Vargas has had a terrific season and he's been a reliable streaming option for me all season long. You won't get many strikeouts but what you will get is a guy who takes the bump and finds a way to win. (stats)
Chris Young SP Mariners: Like Vargas Young has put together a very good 2014 campaign and like Vargas you won't get a bunch of strikeouts but his ERA is good as is his WHIP and he might also pick up a win. (stats)
Josh Reddick OF Athletics: Plenty have written this guy off but he's been getting the job done in the last month or so. His slash line is a steady .255/.309/.429/.738. You could do a lot worse than Reddick. (stats)
