Game Thread #59: Oakland Athletics at New York Yankees

New, comments

The A's will be gunning for their fifth win in a row tonight--and the series win against the Yankees--after their late comeback last night, tying the game in the eighth and scoring three in the tenth for the win. Jesse Chavez will take the mound for the A's, facing off against LHP Vidal Nuno.

The Oakland Athletics have turned into media darlings, seemingly overnight, as they are basking in their early success to the season, that as we all seem to know instinctively, could have been even better. Tonight they will get a shot on actual ESPN television.

Big, important, nationally-televised games are usually the A's Achilles (with the Cespedes exception, of course), so they would do well to work out the yips early, field balls cleanly, and remember who they are and why this season is magical. Also Jesse Chavez should model his first start of June after his April starts, not his May ones.

More importantly for this series, this A's should win this game to win the series, because they are facing Masahiro Tanaka tomorrow, and he is kind of good:

The Yankees' Thursday starter, Masahiro Tanaka, has recorded quality starts in each of his 11 outings this year, the longest active streak of its kind in the Majors.

The A's are swapping Coco Crisp for Craig Gentry in the top spot, and they are only starting one of their three catchers; Norris gets the nod tonight. Blanks is at first so Moss can play the outfield, and Callaspo will be DH'ing with Punto at second. All ready for some baseball? Here are the full lineups:
