With Brad Mills not yet on the 40-man roster ahead of today's start, the Athletics waived Sacramento relief pitcher Justin Marks off of the 40-man roster and optioned reliever Evan Scribner to Sacramento. The Texas Rangers claimed Marks off of waivers.
The Athletics had called up the right-handed Evan Scribner last Tuesday after starting pitcher Drew Pomeranz injured his glove hand punching a wooden chair following a tough start against the Texas Rangers on Monday. The A's worked with eight relievers temporarily until Mills was slotted into the rotation for tonight's start against the Boston Red Sox, pushing starter Jesse Chavez back to Saturday. Scribner did not enter a game in his three days on the active roster. In Sacramento, Scribner is 2-1 with a 4.32 ERA over 25 innings in 21 appearances this year. Scribner has walked only six batters and struck out 34 for the River Cats.
Purchased from the Kansas City Royals for cash considerations on June 6, Justin Marks was moved into a relief role this year after four seasons of mediocre starting. The Athletics drafted the left-handed Marks in the third round of the 2009 draft, and sent him with Vin Mazzaro to Kansas City for right fielder David Dejesus in November 2010. Between Omaha and Sacramento this season, Marks was 3-2 with a 5.03 ERA over 34 innings in 17 appearances, including two starts in Omaha. On the plus, he walked only 12 while striking out 29.
The likely reason the Athletics have not moved Raul Alcantara to the 60-day disabled list to open a 40-man roster spot is that he would accrue service time if moved from the minor league disabled list to the major league 60-day disabled list. (Thanks to Melissa Lockard at oaklandclubhouse.com and Chris Kusiolek (twitter @Oak_AllDay) for putting me on the right path on that question.)
Today's moves postpone any decision on moving the struggling Jim Johnson or Jeff Francis at least until the A's decide to activate the left-handed Eric O'Flaherty. Both a 40- and 25-man roster move will be needed when that occurs. Of note, O'Flaherty travelled with the River Cats to Round Rock, Texas for a series concluding tonight before they head to New Orleans for a Saturday to Tuesday series. The A's could have O'Flaherty join the Midland Rockhounds in San Antonio before the Texas League All-Star Game instead, however, ahead of an activation.
In four appearances between Stockton and Sacramento, O'Flaherty has struck out four and walked one and conceded two earned runs on one home run in 4⅔ innings. Barring a re-injury, O'Flaherty must be activated by July 6.
