Down On The Farm: A's 2013 Minor League Hitting & Pitching Leaders

With the minor league regular season coming to an end last week, I took the opportunity to take a look at the A's minor league hitting and pitching stat leaders on my Athletics Farm blog this week and I thought some of you here on Athletics Nation might find it interesting too.

The one guy who really jumps out at you here is first baseman Max Muncy. He got off to a great start with Stockton and, despite starting off slow at Midland, he still finished the season leading all A's minor leaguers in home runs, walks, RBIs and total bases. It was encouraging to see that the A's top draft pick this year, outfielder Billy McKinney, led all A's minor leaguers (with 200+ at-bats) in batting with a .326 average. Of course, Daric Barton led all A's minor leaguers in OBP - no surprise there! And current A's catcher Stephen Vogt topped the list in both SLG and OPS. Our negative stat leaders include Renato Nunez who made 39 errors in 114 games at third base for Beloit, while fellow third baseman B.A. Vollmuth struck out a whopping 161 times in 471 at-bats for Stockton, who almost had 3 players with 150+ strikeouts this season.

For the purposes of this leader board, I've included players from all the A's full-season affiliates in Sacramento, Midland, Stockton and Beloit, as well as the A's short-season affiliates in Vermont and the Arizona League, but I've left off the Dominican League just because play can be so unpredictable down there and the stats aren't often all that telling. The most notable Dominican big-stat achiever though was OF-2B Rodolfo Penalo who managed to steal 29 bases in 39 attempts over 51 games. And in case you're wondering, he's 21 years old and listed at 5'7" and 130 lbs. Gees, the last time I weighed that, Bill Clinton was still in the Oval Office getting...oh nevermind...
