Say what you will about Rich Harden, he is not intimidated by pinstripes.
Giving up two runs in five and a third, Harden recalled a time in the early part of the last decade, when the A's weren't afraid to stare down the Yankees. In winning their first game from the Yankees since April 22, 2010, the A's broke an 11 game losing streak to New York. Harden, along with a bullpen that clearly had a bend, don't break attitude toward the perennial powerhouse, the A's held on for victory, 4-3.
A couple of long balls from CompliantPork and Hideki Matsui, together with some station-to-station hitting allowed just enough breathing room for the A's to squeeze 27 outs from a beautiful New York day.
A's offense: Josh Willingham knocked it over the left field wall after Matsui singled in the third, a single/walk/walk/single combo among Swooney/Conor/Powell/Jemile respectively top of the sixth, and a solo shot from Godzilla over the short porch in right in the seventh was the sum total of the A's offensive output.
Even the especially aggressive base running by New Yawk in the ninth could not turn the A's away. Woo.
Positives:
- Both Harden and Grant Balfour worked out of bases-loaded situations to preserve the win.
- Willingham continues to show good power, hopefully making his imminent departure more valuable. A high profile home run like this can do nothing but help his value.
- Jemile Weeks continued his timely hitting--two hits with an RBI in aforementioned station-to-station situation (though his base running continues to be as point of contention).
- Landon Powell threw out another runner and continues to look good in the backup role.
Long game. Short recap. Come back tomorrow when Gio tries to, dare we hope, take the series versus the Yankees versus big bad Bartolo. Woo.
