Open Thread: Game 131 (Oakland Athletics at New York Yankees)

I'm going to take a stab at it and say that today's game against the Yankees will turn out better than yesterday's. I know, I know, we had our Cy-contending ace and they had a guy with a career ERA above 5. But today will be better.

Possibly not much better, unfortunately, as our great pitching advantage evaporated overnight. Our fifth starter Vin Mazzaro (6-6, 3.61 ERA) gets to face a 2004 first round pick in Phil Hughes (15-6, 4.12 ERA). Incidentally, Hughes would be the worst starter in the Oakland rotation (with an ERA almost 60 points above our current worst), but he has a win-loss record better than anyone we've got. Wonder why that is.

On the other side of the team, we've got Jeff Larish making an encore performance in left field tonight, after his 3 for 4 night yesterday with a single, a double, four RBIs, and a stare-and-drool home run that's probably floating somewhere in the Long Island Sound.

First pitch is at 4:05 Pacific.
