The A's lineup was already bad enough with their best two power hitters being "20HR threat" sluggerlets Kevin Kouzmanoff and Kurt Suzuki. Both were scratched from today's lineup, leaving the #3-#4 hitters to be a pair of guys (Sweeney, Chavez) with 0 HRs and no power outbursts anticipated anytime particularly soon. Combine that with the leadoff hitter's .250 OBP and you have a laughable lineup of 7-8-9 hitters from top to bottom.
Still, the A's battled 1-1 through 6 innings on the strength of Brett Anderson's fine pitching. Oh right, Anderson left after just 80 pitches with "tightness in his left elbow." Just divine. Oh, don't get me started on Joey...
With the A's up 1-0 in the 3rd, two on and nobody out, Rajai Davis tried to bunt but fouled off two pitches before popping up to short RF. Fail. With Oakland trailing only 3-1 in the bottom of the 8th, first and third one out for Sweeney, Ryan greeted a brand-new reliever, lefty Tony Sipp, by going after the first pitch and bouncing into a 4-6-3 DP. Fail. Chad Gaudin, Craig Breslow, and Edwar Ramirez in the 8th and 9th? Epic fail.
Finally, speaking of epic fails, why couldn't I post the lineups, new threads, and a quicker recap, from the game today? That's because I was in a luxury suite -- that would seem to make me a "preferred VIP customer," right? -- and brought my laptop so I could tend to AN throughout the game. "Oh, we've closed the wireless in the luxury suites," I was informed. "No wireless for you!!!" Wait, you've told patrons of your most expensive seats that you want to make sure you can't access the internet? Wow, just another way the Oakland A's go the extra mile to convince people not to come to their games. Pathetic.
